How to become certified for MCS with OFTEC
OFTEC are now accredited to offer the redeveloped MCS installer scheme called MCS:2025 v1.0. With consumer protection at the heart of the redeveloped scheme this new scheme will boost consumer confidence and streamline processes for installers.
MCS registration is a requirement for many grant-funded schemes including the Government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). To learn more about these schemes please click here.
Please note: MCS registration is only currently available in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man and technologies available for registration are for heat pumps (air to water, ground source and heat pump system design), solar thermal or biomass.
MCS:2025 scheme requirements
For businesses wishing to achieve MCS registration the installing technician (aka technical supervisor) needs to hold a valid (under five years) regulated qualification or personal certification in the technologies applied for. For personal certification in heat pumps please see OFTEC’s training information and for all other heat pump regulated qualifications plus solar heating and biomass technologies see MCS training information.
Applicants must also hold relevant competent person scheme registration to access the MCS installer scheme. MCS registered installers are required to work to the MCS installer operating requirements and will be assessed by OFTEC as certifiable via the MCS conformity assessment guidelines.
Registration is awarded for one year following satisfactory completion of an evaluation of your office management system and on-site technical inspection of your chosen technology(s). Renewal of registration and surveillance inspections must be taken annually.
In addition, you will be required to work and demonstrate compliance to the MCS installation standards for your chosen technologies as follows:
- Installation of Air to Water or Ground Source Heat Pumps MIS 3005-I:2025
- Design of Heat Pump Systems MIS 3005-D:2025
- Installation of Solar Heating MIS 3001:2025
- Installation of Biomass MIS 3004:2025
